We will always specialise in the Sussex breed but over the last few years a few
other breeds have taken our fancy. Some for the markings others for the colour eggs produced some because they just look pretty.
So this year for the first time we are advertising additional breeds for sale.
We will be able to supply hatching eggs as well as Point of lay hens
Welsummer - is a large, upright, active bird with a broad back,
full breast and large full tail. Their head has a single comb, medium wattles, almond shaped ear lobes and a strong, short
beak. They have yellow legs which fade to pale yellow in summer and reddish bay eyes. They lay lovely large dark brown eggs.
The hens are friendly, easily handled birds which love to free range and forage for food but can also be kept in runs
quite happily.
Cuckoo Marans
- Marans are easy to look after and if given the space will be active. They are a disease resistant breed. Marans
will produce an almost chocolate brown egg and are quite placid in nature. The cuckoo coloured Marans, rang from a very dark
grey colour down to silver. They have bright orange eyes and white legs.
Pekin
Bantam - A very gentle bird. They are good layers of small eggs. They make excellent pets for
children as they are tame. They settle very well and require little space. Pekins can look rather pale and anaemic if not
allowed on grass to forage. They tend not to scratch around in flower beds so are good birds to keep in an urban garden. They
are normally a robust and long-lived bird that loves company and the colour choices are nearly endless.
